    Unmarked UBoot badge

This badge looks like a Juncker type . I run into difficulties to identify the material (or the strange patina) . opinions ?
    Many thanks

I think that this is a Junker....but I could be wrong.

        giorgio,

Never proved 100%, but many feel this style is a Juncker product based on the hardware. Your's looks like tombak with the firegilding finish gone. Still nice and the details on these are rather nice.

For lack of a better box to put it in, this is called a "Juncker" badge, but like Tim said, no clear cut proof at this time. You see it sometimes with a convincing Schwerin Berlin mark also.

How these marks got there is also up for debate IMO.

Naturally we can't do a visual chemical analysis, but I have had many of these in hand. It is tombak. You rarely see one like Tim's though with the nice finish, most look like the one in the first post.

Usually the Juncker badges show a beautiful fire gilding . In this case I don't see any gilding . The badge shows a burnst Sienna hue as if made in buntmetall without traces of gilding . I find this badge a little uncommon
I have asked the seller for other pics
            Further opinions ?

The eagle's head is so very reminiscent of a Heer Flak eagle by CEJ.

                giorgio,

IMO, the badge is 100% correct. Hardware and pin are correct for this maker as well. Wear looks believable to me.

Perhaps this one is towards the end of the tombak production and "maybe" it never had firegilding applied. Just guessing, but we have seen other badges that show no signs of finish being applied, perhaps it was a cost or production cut as time went on?? Still, a very nice looking u-boat badge and one with a better design than most.

                Best,
                Tim

The Juncker badges have a style unique . Quite so ! some badges J are mm Schwerin but IMO as a consequence of an odd supply from J to S (if I remember rightly a similar deal existed between J and IMME)
Possibly the J badge is analogue to S as regard the machining of the hinge block seat .
The two badges point out styles quite different. Following GW we attribute this type to J , but in any case ,IMO, the badges come from an indipendent maker , probably working in Berlin area
                  All the best

Sorry , I am not familiar with the Heer Flak badge. Please, can you show this badge ?
                    regards

I agree , the badge almost certainly is an original . I have some doubts as regards the colouring .
Some days ago I have seen c/o Weitze a PM buntmetall badge with a like shade. Maybe a tombac w/t gilding has the same colour
                      regards

                        Hi,

The example I used to own was in slightly better condition than the one above but even so I was never 100% sure whether there was finish on it. It was either finished as polished tombak or it had a thin gold coloured plating applied rather than being fire-gilt. I could see no indication of fire-gilt on the example I owned, even in the recesses where I would have expected it.

                        Regards
                        Mike

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!

If you PM/contact me without the courtesy of using your first name, please don't be offended if I politely ignore you!

Hi giorgio a little late but looks good to me, have come across various examples like the one shown in my travels with no evidence of a finish. All the best
