    Bronze u-boat close combat clasp

Here's some photos of a u-boat close combat clasp that my grandfather brought back from when he served on a US submarine. His boat captured a German sub and after bringing it to a safe port the people in his crew were allowed to go aboard and take a look around. While he was inside the German sub he "pilfered" this badge.

That clasp is an original and looks to be in great shape.

If there is any more to the story about how your Grandfather 'obtained' the badge, I know many would like to hear it.

I wish I knew what boat it was from, but sadly that's all I know of the story. He served on the USS Redfin, though. While he was aboard he also physically unscrewed these information plaques from the walls of the sub. Both seem to be talking about loading torpedo tubes or something along those lines.

Nice original piece, but unfortunately, the story is wrong. No German submarine was captured by a US submarine. The only German submarine captured by the Americans was U-505 by a surface hunter killer group and that submarine now resides in Chicago.

A number of other submarines were captured during the war, very few, but the rest were all captured by the British.

Redfin operated in the Pacific, not the Atlantic, and while German U-boats operated in the Pacific, Redfin did not meet one.

Redfin however has a heroic record without the German submarine story and can be found on its official website for your review:

It must have been one captured by someone else then. My grandfather is getting up there in age so not everything he tell me about is always remembered completely correct. I'm just glad he remembers the general basis of how he got it.
