Another Is-This-Real U Boat Badge Question

    Hello to all,

Wonderful forum ! It has come up several times in searches I've done in the past. This is my first post as a member. This Kreigsmarine U Boat Badge is a recent yard sale find. Is it authentic ?

    Thanks much,
    Lynn

    Lynn,

Keep in mind that the Schwerin marked U-boat badges have been the most sought after and most copied of all u-boat badges and for a very long time now.

IMO, this badge looks cast and the pin looks too wide and flat. Very rough looking. If you buy it, don't spend a lot of money on it, but IMO, I would pass.
    Tim

Here's a comparison badge to look at:

Reverse; note the pin and maker's mark.

                  Ouchy ouchy ouchy

Thanks to all who posted. Although the badge is mine, all mine, it was part of a larger group of yard sale items that didn't break my piggy bank.

Remind me never to ask you guys if these jeans make me look fat.

Type into the search feature "Schwerin Berlin submarine badge" or join and access the excellent research articles at the top of this forum, and your questions will be answered in detail. If you still have problems, and especially before you buy an item, then post away.

Jeans? You have to go the jeans forum here, they are good at spotting the fake ones post-1945.

Hi, John...I just took your advice and became a member. These forums are truly amazing resources. I foresee quite a few questions in my near future, so I'm certain my membership fee will be money well spent. How many questions do I get for $25.00 ?

                      Lynn

                        Lynn,

You can post as many questions as you want, that is the purpose of the forum and there are many very knowledgeable collectors here and on the other fourm subsections at WAF. Please understand that none of us claim to be experts and only try to share what research has been conducted in the past (through the search feature), articles like the ones above, and our personal experience. This is not an easy hobby and there will be conflicting views of course. However, the kriegsmarine forum is not too bad compared to crosses, cloth items and the like. By now, most KM badges are pretty clear-cut so most of your questions can be answered I think.

The final decision with any purchase will rest with the collector, we are just are a resource for you to consider first.

With the cost of badges today, the $25 spent here is nothing if it saves you from buying a fake and even if you do not buy any badges, this forum can be interesting from just an historical perspective.

You can also go ahead and post better images of your badges now, either a decent camera or a scanner will do the job. You can see from this thread how Tim Ball posted his images, this is the quality that we need to help determine if a badge is real or not.

If you are new, and I do not know if you are a new collector or not, please go very carefully and post first before you buy anything out there. Best to learn a bit first before you part with any hard earned cash.

Anyway, welcome to the forum. John

                          Lynn,

Welcome to the forums and don't worry too much, you have a good (fake) badge to learn your mistakes from.

                          And now, about those jeans!!!

Good try Tim, Lynn is married to a Special Forces officer. I think I am going to change my initial post to nice badge not disproved as real. How is that for a dance. John

Better yet, John, how about "a rare and near perfect badge and I must have it at any price" ?

And thanks much for the welcome, Tim.
