My KM badge fleet is in port

    Hi folks,
I took this picture a few days ago and it is of some of my KM awards. It has taken me over 25 years to complete this set, most of these badges were obtained from veterans and yard sales. As a matter of fact the only 4 badges I bought from dealers or collectors were the two U-boat clasps, the 2nd pattern S-boot and the L/18 Mayer U-boat. BTW, the Blockade Runner is cased.

I am very proud of them.

          Jody,

Probably one of the nicest sets of KM badges in the world. Quite impressive. John

Beautiful set! As I recall the Aux Cruisre is a Schwerin. Keep them in a safe acid free environment.

What do you suggest? Very hard if you live in LA for example, even San Diego these days. Jody has some bit of luck with his location and I also think he keeps them in safe deposit boxes for the most part, right Jody?

But if you are going to display your badges, do you have some ideas?

Zinc is really the problem, so the frontspanges are to be watched I guess, I am not sure if the tombak pieces are truly that much to worry about if under glass for example in some sort of case.

Like to hear opinions on this issue. We have all heard the stories of the zinc types losing finish in just a year, true stories, so it is part of the hobby to which we need to pay attention.

Beautiful set! To be honest, I never knew the difference between the first & second pattern s-boats, until looking at this photo. Now I see it's pretty obvious...

                              My collection

                              Hello guys,
Thanks for the comments. Since I live in AZ i really have not had an issue with zinc. I keep my awards in safes or safety deposit boxes and they get little action otherwise. I keep them in riker mounts and every few weeks I lift the lid and give them a breather. So far I have seen no difference in any of my zinc pieces.

                              Regards,
                              Jody
