Well the only book that I have on badges is Tucker's book on German Combat Badges. It is helpful but does not go into detail on what to look for. Of the different U-boat badges shown, they are all cut out between the keel and the wreath at the bottom of the badge. the maker mark is kind of light and the catch and pin is not like that shown in the book on a Wernstein badge, but it does look like the last badge shown in the section on page 278 that has the caption talking about sailors personalizing their badges "like this early fire guilded badge" To my very untrained eye the detail is pretty good. I would like to get an expert opinion that is usualy found here please.
By the way thank you for not letting me off easy I have tried to do my homework on this one. Although my resources are rather limited at this time.
I would like to get some more books that give a little more detail on more of the different badges and something on third reich medals. Any sugggestions? thank you frank v.Attached Files

Hi Frank,
I think your observations are correct in that the problems are there is no space beneath the keel and also the pin set up is wrong for this badge. In addition to this the detail on the wreath seems poor.
My guess is that it is a cast copy from an original badge, hence the appearance of the faint makers mark and the style of the badge being correct. They did not bother to remove the area between the keel and the wreath and fitted the wrong pin set up as you have noted.
Any of the other guys have any other opinions?Regards, Rob
