    Orth U-Boat badge

My dad had this since the 60's and i've had it myself for the last 10 years. From what i can tell it looks right with the correct set up and FO mm. Detail on obverse looks good also, although finish is totally gone. Are there any red flags with this one or is it ok. Any replies much appreciated.

    Hi
No problems at all with this one !!!!Hard to tell for sure from the photo, but the hinge should be in a slight recess. Most of my F.O. badges are in close tothe same state of finish retention, but Orth badges do seem to show nice sharp detail

Thanks Steve, thought it was OK. Yes it does sit in a small recess or is it a raised line around where the hinge goes, again something i had noticed on these badges. The fronts also had some vaseline treatment to stop any zincpest.

        A question Please,
I have seen now quite a few U-boat badges with this same kind of finish,
were there two finishes for U-boat badges or is gold finish completly worn off of this badge and the others. Thanks for the time.

          Hi Van,
Most seem to feel that the finish is absorbed by the zinc in these old zinc badges.Glen's u-boat badge shows virtually no real wear, but the finish is virtually gone.I have a destroyer badge by Orth with absolutely no wear at all ,yet the finish is totally gone except for on the hardware. Some makers may prep their badges better than others;probably that accounts for better finish retention under the same storage conditions.I do know that F.Orth badges seem to be about the worst for finish retention that I have dealt with..maybe just my luck ,because they're my main interest ,but I think there's something more to it.
          Regards,
          Steve
