Schwerin Minesweeper. Good, Bad or just plain Ugly!

    Hi All..

I would be most grateful for an opinion on this Minesweeper that I have been offered.

I have checked out the excellent thread by Robert Hudspith on Schwerin badges, but I'm still a little unsure. As a rule, I stay away from awards unless they come from a known or reputable source. As I want to get more clued up on these badges, I'm daring to venture out a little further.

Unfortunately I only have four images to go off. If anyone can tell me Yeh or Neh based on these, I would be truly grateful.

    Many thanks

    Max

    Pictures

Those pictures are not the best as you stated but if it is good the pin and catch have been replaced. The pictures of the front are not focused enough.
    Just my thoughts

      Hi Max,

The pics are not great as you say but I believe I can see enough that would steer me well clear of this one.

The hinge/pin/catch are obviously all wrong but the problem is that I do not see any real indications of hinge repair. The basemetal does not appear to me to be zinc (way too shiny), leaving only fire-gilded tombak as an option. The gilding does not look fire-gilt to me and it appears the basemetal, where exposed (especially on the edges) is silvery in colour. The reverse wreath edges to me look soft, rather than exhibiting the common Schwerin hand-finishing, and the flat surfaces on the oblique reverse image has a strange (?casting) effect I would not be comfortable with.

For me, from these pics, I'd strongly suggest the badge is an older, but fair quality, repro casting.

      Regards
      Mike

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!

          Thanks for the info chaps!

Thank you very much guys, that's good enough for me.

I knew that the pin etc was wrong, but looking at other threads thought it may be a replacement.

I'll definately steer clear of this one thanks for your advice, it all racks up as experience...

          Cheers!
