    Juncker or Schwerin U-boat badge?

    Hello folks,
I scanned this badge yesterday. It belongs to my good friend Victor. This badge was obtained in 1980 (I was with him when it was bought, veteran pick up).

So what do you think, it is fire gilted as well. This badge was even inspected by Steve Wolfe, Bob McCarthy, and a mutual friend of Mike Kenny and I, Peter C. from Perth (Peter looked at it in July of 2002). No one had an issue with it.

    Regards,
    Jody

An original Juncker! I'm not sure what to make of the stamp. Can we get a closeup of the mm. best wishes,

        Hi Jeff,
We couldn't, but I have inspected it and it is a textbook stamp. I wonder if it was sold through Schwerin?

A couple observations Jody. We know that the badge is an original wartime submarine tombak. However, we do not know it is a Juncker, we are just guessing on this one--in fact, it is one of the few KM badges that we are not relatively sure about. Personally, I doubt if it is a Juncker, but for sake of nomenclature, it is as good as any labels.

Since the badge posted is period and the maker mark also seems to be good, we can only make some assumptions. One might be that the badge was either produced by Schwerin and is a prototype perhaps, or, maybe it was made in the same factory for another maker and was stamped.

So this badge is going to have to go into the category of speculation I think as far as its history.

            Hi John,
Maybe it is the missing link?

I have come across a number of incorrectly marked flak badges as I work on the book. The badges are correct as are the mm and i am certain there was no attempt to fake. I have also come cross some with mismatched eagles. We ascribe too much perfection to the Germans. I am sure there was some cross-polination. At any rate, the badge is awesome. The design is my favorite.

While I've no issue with the badge or the maker's mark, I'm very confused about seeing them at the same time.

Interesting. Is this the only one we have seen with a mark? I ask as some dealers often refer to this style as "Schwerin" as well and I never understood their reasoning.

Interesting badge, can you post a side photo of the catch?

Also can anyone post a reverse photo of an unmarked juncker to see if this is the standard set up

                      Regards

One thing to keep in mind; Schwerin U-boat badges have been copied quite successfully for a number of years and this includes the maker's mark. We have seen the Schwerin mark applied to various U-boat designed badges in the past to fool collectors.

With that said, are we 100% sure this isn't another case of an original (possibly Juncker-not proven yet) badge with a bogus Schwerin stamping applied postwar to increase potential value. Schwerin was considered the premier manufacturer of Kriegsmarine badges and were highly sought after by collectors, thus any stamped Schwerin piece commanded higher prices.

Something to think about. IMO, this badge is not a real Schwerin.

                              Oh, another one btw.
