    HSF Friedrich Orth

    Hello All,
Just wanted to run this badge by you all for opinions. I've had it 15 years and it came from a trusted source, so I'm not worried about originality, but it never hurts to let real KM collectors give it a lookover. Also, appreciate your ideas as to how difficult these are to find.

I'm considering selling some of my KM badges. I know you all hate to discuss prices, so not looking for those; I'll just try to spend the hours of time searching the internet myself to see. Searching the e-stand doesn't help as most sellers remove the price once an item sells. Anybody have any suggestions, or should I just save the time and start at a higher price and work my way down? Not trying to be a pain, but I've almost never sold any of my badges before.
    Thank you,
    Dale

        Hi Dale,

Imo a nice original. Orths are less common than Schwerins and in some respects have better detail. Being zincers, finding one with really good, unmessed with finish is tough though. Looks like yours retain +-50% of a brighter gilting, so not a bad example.

        Regards
        Mike

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!

If you PM/contact me without the courtesy of using your first name, please don't be offended if I politely ignore you!

Hope the Army is keeping you relatively safe!

In regards to selling, a few points to keep in mind if you are new at this.

          1. Determine the price you want--this is the easiest step.

          2. Determine how you are going to paid--ie, paypal, cash, check. THis also impacts on which countries you want to sell to. Usually, paypal is the easiest for overseas/domestic buyers.

          3. Discuss in the sales thread who pays for the paypal or other fees and how much they are going to be.

          4. Most important, how is it going to be shipped. I recommend fedex, ups only but up to you. I think it is very important to have tracking on these items. I would never just send it in the normal mail. If it does not arrive, you can't prove you sent it and there is a problem. In any case, you need to make up your mind on this point or at least discuss it with the buyer.

          5. If going overseas, discuss with the buyer how the customs form is going to be filled out. I do not recommend "WWII German Navy Badge".

What you put there is up to you but try to keep it low key.

          6. Discuss with the buyer insurance. Personally, I never insure if it goes Fedex or UPS. However, this is up to the buyer and talk about it.

          7. Last, and very important, pack the badge correctly. Many threads on this, I recommend a small box with the badge inside well wrapped, then that box is wrapped with bubble wrap and put inside a heavy duty padded mailing envelope or another box. Do not save on shipping costs by poorly wrapping the badge or you risk the hinge or pin being broken/damaged.

There are many opinions on this subject and many threads. The above is just one more I guess, but I have never had a problem buying or selling a badge if it was well packed and then shipped fedex or ups in spite of the greater cost. The cost has to be balanced with how you would feel if the badge did not arrive or arrived broken for both the buyer and the seller.

The other nice thing about fedex/ups, it gets to the buyer very quickly, and you can track it the entire way. I for one like to see a badge show up with 4 days. The less days in transit, the less chance for it to be lost or damaged.

My recent experience from Germany to the US is less than two days, sometimes one, using fedex, this has happened three times in a row. Not bad.

My take and I know, did not answer your first question on value, but I am sure others can help you there.

          John

            Mike and John,
Thanks for the advice. Still not sure if I'll sell or not. Medals and badges are my first love and selling any of them (beyond the common ones that I've had a lot of) would be almost like giving away my children, but the hobby's getting too pricy to keep everything.
            Again, thanks for the help.

Hi Dale, nice badge.I do like the FO badges, nice detail, but as Mike said hard to find with a good, intact finish. The HSF badge also comes with the "cast-in"hinge and catch, probably the set-up Mark has on his badge.
                best wishes,
                Martin.

Hi Dale nice original. F.O. These are hard to find with any decent amount of finish as they did not retain it for very long. Have just sold mine but the proceeds have gone to a minty Juncker U-Boat . Be carefull of the finish the one i had was in excellent condition but over the years it lost all its finish, could have cried watching it slowly dissappear .All the best

                          Mark,
Nice badge. Could you post a picture of the front also?

And a question for you and/or mrg - are the Orth HSF badges always zinc, or did they also come in buntmetall? I've had this one for 15 years and it's mostly sat in a plastic bag in a box as I move often, so I only look at it occasionally. As far as I can tell, it hasn't lost any finish, but who knows. I got a nice early Schwerin, heavily polished but owner and ship-named, so I'll probably sell this one.

                            Dale,

I haven't seen a FO tombak HSF, though that's not to say that they are not out there.

                            Here is my obverse,
