          Hi,

Zinc? I don't know about that although the appearance of bubbling on the reverse may give that impression (and is actually a worry). To me, this example looks like a Cave Creek Special repro (very sharp reverse scallop) without the maker mark. They are getting sneaky.

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!

If you PM/contact me without the courtesy of using your first name, please don't be offended if I politely ignore you!

Based upon the reverse I would say bad. I think Mike has nailed it.

                Hi Mike,

My thoughts exactly - also, look at the shear lines on the edge photo - is that a mismatch there - edge of a casting?

                Regards ...

Not sure if I would say it was a poor attempt with that bubbling and zink catch. It sure is an attempt to decieve by giving it the appearance of a zink badge and one which I have not seen before.

Also, the shear marks on the edge attempt to give credence to it being a good piece.

Nethertheless, it is a as you say.

Hi Hagwalther maybe its the pics but for me the front just lacks the quality that the Germans were so capable of in the early stages of the war. The torpedeo tube, latch, and torpedeo door looks malformed, amongst other things. The spines of the wreath look warped and largely varing in thickness.Just no sharpness to the detail for me. Bubbling is not that hard to achieve takes very little effort once you now how. I do agree however it would fool many a collector and like you say shear marks add to the effect. All the best

                        You are quite right MRG.

I have a nice Tombak Schwerin Type 1 and the differences are obvious as you state.

                        Don

I will put this one in the fakes forum when I get a moment. It is an interesting item though although pretty dodgy.

                        Regards...
