Sorry Bruce but it's a fake. Totally wrong for a GWL badge. Notice the front of the sub where it meets the wreath, the shape of the leaves on the wreath, the makers mark is wrong (to small), and the bump in front of the conning tower, eagles head, etc. Original GWL U-boat badges are of very good quality in regards to detail and the hinge and clasp are cast as part of the badge. This one is no good.

          Cheers,
          Brett

I agree that it is a fake but note that there are TWO types of good GWL U-Boat badges. One is of the type that Bill Stump shows (cast in hinge, catch and cut out swastika). The other type has a solid swastika and seperate hinge and catch:

                    ANOTHER EXAMPLE

Here is an example I have in my reproduction files. I have never seen one of this type that I thought was original.

                        Hi,
Bill even though yours looks similar look close and you will see difference's the eagles head the flag and the little lump on the deck under the flag.
i've had this badge 30 years which i no is no indication but were it came from there is a very strong chance 95%.

You have better eyes than mine. All I see is slight differences in hand finishing. Here is the eagle on my badge. I can't see any difference on yours.

                            FLAG AND DECK GUN

Here is the flag and deck gun in close up. Again, other than the hand finishing, I see no difference.
