Looking at it for 20 seconds I say no. I could be wrong and should do some comparisons but if I was at a gun show and had no help I would pass.

Looking at it closer and using some reference material, I stand by my original assessment.

I agree with Al, the badge is not authentic IMO.

          - fat neck, head not shaped correctly.
          - pin, hinge are wrong.

I'll say no as well. Lots of little things missing/wrong for me. Looks like a nice fire-gilt finish though, which is a worry.

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!

If you PM/contact me without the courtesy of using your first name, please don't be offended if I politely ignore you!

Looks like a reworked version of the old "cyclops" fake that Manions used to sell, take a look at the eye on the eagles head.

The finish does look more convincing though, unfortunately

The fakers are getting better. I am sure many will be fooled. Still fake though. best wishes,

Yes, no doubt a fake. I hope this serves as a word of caution, especially with this badge, that a quick decision could mean the loss of 700 and up euros.

Maybe in hand different, but just looking at a website, depending on how presented, this badge could fool most people I think.

                    Fake made by Karsten Staegemeir.

                      Fake U-boat

                      Hello,
John and I were talking about this badge over the weekend. It is a fake, but as you can see they are getting better (that gilt is something else). The sad part is that badges like this will force more and more out of the hobby. I shudder to think about what the Schwerin fake U-boat will look like in 2010.

I have said it before, buy up those Frank & Rief U-boat badges now. They will be considered good 20 years from now.

                      Regards,
                      Jody

Retitled the thread. As Jody said, if this is the direction of Schwerin Kriegsmarine fakes, we need to stay on top of them as a collectors' community to warn others of how close they are getting.

I am sure this one has no problem at all at a show, but maybe in hand it is does not have the right feel.

                          Fake U-boat

                          Hello,
I wonder what it costs to produce such a badge?

                          Regards,
                          Jody

Going by what it costs to get other similar things

Starting from a good mold casting would run about 7~15$ as crack for a gross with a very good wash.

The expensive part is the mold which may cost about 200~600 to create.

Add the cost of an original badge 200$ you get a cost like at about 10 to 20$ a crack

They sell for 300+ so you are making 100% retail.

                            Not bad!

This would be high end and in the W Europe and NA In E Europe you could still get this done for about 1/2 that and in India about 1/5th if you had the contacts

The expensive part would be the hinges/hardware which I think would account for 50% of the cost.

Just a ball bark of course.

                              Hi,
That is good to know. I am going to start producing them myself. They will be perfect in every detail, except for the hallmark: Schwerin Berlin 69

                              Regards,
