    Unmarked Hymmen U-boat badge

My latest addtion to the fleet an early fire-gilded tombak U-Boat Badge by Hymmen. This was part of the estate of naval war correspondent Leutnant Walter Ruefer who was ultimately killed in action aboard U-602.

The boat went missing from the 19th April 1943 in the Mediterranean and with conflicting accounts to another boat in the area of operations the story was set straight in 2005 when it was reported that indeed U-602 was found in 90m of water off the coast of Ibiza.

U-602 was sunk sunk via a depth charge attack from an RAF Hudson, all 48 hands were lost.

I'm going to try and obtain the pictures of the rest of his wares that were in the sale some time ago and the estate split; hopefully a picture of Leutnant Ruefer is among the items, of which it would be nice to find out more about him too.

A nice badge for a Hymmen so to speak: polished highlights on the wreath, leading edges of the wings on a more matt gold finish and the swas highly polished - which really sets off the badge when in hand.

        Marcus,

Very nice! I glanced in here because I saw the word "Hymmen." I see their KM eagles were ugly too!

            Hi Marcus,
That is a great badge. I still have to get one by that maker.

                Marcus,

Yes, the bird has a hell-of-a chest, to be sure. But the gilting and polish job really show the high quality finish.

Still one missing from my 'wardrobe', too! Congrats!

                Bestes,
                Mark

                    Marcus,

Nice badge Nobody liked these until Gordon Williamson posted one about a year back and I think we are slowly starting to see more of these now that people are not so leary of them. I do like the more solid pin on yours compared to the flimsy horizontal ones I have seen of late.

They seem to be averaging about 600,00 Euros at the moment for a horizontal pin variety. Not as nice IMO, but supposedly more rare with this pin setup.

Current link to one on sale: Untitled Document.

Detlev has had a few recently as well, and surprisingly, they haven't moved very fast. In fact he had to lower one by 200 Euros to sell one not too long ago.

                          Hi Tim,

I think Weitze has a few of these too: when I last looked I think he had two or three perhaps ? They do seem to be surfacing all at once, as it were !

Incidently this badge I own actually is the example Gordon showed here a year or two ago.

                              Hi Marcus!

That's interesting as I remember Gordon was quite excited to find it when he did. Good for you!

I know Gordon has moved several pieces from his collection lately and was lucky to get that six-rivet Deschler DKiG (Schreiber's) from him. Hope he isn't leaving the hobby?
