    2nd Pattern E-Boat Badge "R.S."

    I bought this badge a few years ago when I was in Hamburg. I wanted to replace a Schwerin/Peekhaus example I had which ws in poor condition.

    The front of this RS badge looks pit-marked to me. The pin and catch are magnetic. Is it fake or legit?

                Several things I don't like:

                Lots of "pitting" on the ship and the waves;
                The wreath and eagle show wear...but no zinc peeping through;
                The catch is wrong...should be a c-catch and a plate.

                I think it's a casting.

                          Hi,

                          Well this one seems to be splitting the pack!

                          I think the badge is probably genuine BUT the obverse has been messed with - ie REFINISHED. The reverse to me looks 100% authentic to me, even though the catch is not typical Souval (the hinge and pin are though) - it even has the light diagonal "lines". Notice that there are remnants of a dark gold plating on the reverse with dark zinc exposed in patches (Post#3) - very different to the bright gold on the obverse and strange "washed out" light grey of the boat.

                          Re the pitting, yes, normally it is a sign of a casting. However let's take this one in context. It is a zinc KriegsMARINE badge.

                          I'll post pics of my example below- a definite NON-bendable RS zincer. It has lots of pitting - the pitting is shallow but "broad" - not pinpoint as per most castings. Imo, my example is showing the evidence of salt water exposure. I think it could genuinely be described as "salty" in appearance.

                          Fyi, the specs for my example;
                          Weight - 44.48 g
                          Height - 60.2 mm (eagle's head to wreath tie)
                          Height - 60.35 mm (eagle's head to base of wreath)
                          Eagle's Wingspan - 34.38 mm

                          Regards
                          Mike

                          PS: the badge in the back of Angolia's For F&F (P444, 2nd edition) is also pitted and the light lines are again visible.
