Hi philippe that was my point and how i would expect a four of that period to resemble, maybe its just the pics and me knit picking , but it does look a little strange to me espescially more so on a unseen war badge. Pity there was not closer pics as it may look different closer. All the best

Weird U-Boat, unknown maker?

Hi,
For what it's worth, my first (and second) impressions of this example are negative. Obverse detail is in places good but in other places is poor (eg inner rows of small eagle's feathers). The reverse hinge/pin/catch construction is imo not period - either fake or replaced. However, the use of an apparently unrepaired catchplate on a non-zinc badge, taking other inconsistencies into account) does not work for me. Heavy hand finishing and no visbile shear marks on the inner edges (at least from the images supplied to date) is not something I'm comfortable with. I'm not even sure if the badge has a finish on it or that's the colour of the base metal.
The makers mark could be anything - something a faker has added for you to reach just such a conclusion that it corresponds to a listed maker. Interesting that the "Z" is actually an "N" on it's side, as is apparent from the different letter heights! I'd have thought a real manufacturer would have had a full set of letter punches, rather than jumbling things up like this.
Sorry guys, not for me. Simply too many "problems" with this one imo.

Late to the thread, but I think Mike is correct. This is most probably a reproduction badge.
I personally do not see the correlation to a Deumer, either obverse or reverse.
I guess some Deumers had solid swazs but most I think had segmented.
The eagle and feather pattern do not see to be the same either. Reverse hinge not the same, the Deumers I have observed have the Schwerin type vice barrel hinges.
No MM on a Deumer to my knowledge.
One for comparison anyway.

So many collectors are seeking rare makers that enterprising individuals are marking original, and fake, badges with fantasy marks. You can try to explain it away, but the entire badge and the marks make me walk away dissapointed that someone bought it with AUTHENTIC money.
