Hello,
Great photo. My guess would be that it was an individual boat or unit insignia. I have seen a few photos where they are attached to tunics. It is hard for me to make out what type of emblem it is.

Regardless, I like the photograph a lot!

There are FAR more accomplished collectors that can render an opinion...however from the stand point of a military man that has been active for nearly 25 years...I see people wear stuff on their uniforms all the time..this looks to me as a Traditions Badge from a unit which the man has served--something he is proud of; something that others would recognize as distinguished, or stand out.

He was part of something and he wants to show it off...

Just my two cents... I have seen it and totally understand it....So my (Educated?) guess would be that the tradionstucke relates to one of the Kriegsabzeichen that the sailor wears on his uniform.

If you look at his wife, you can see very similar things dangling from her dress. I think both wore something that was made for the occasion of that day/week.

The knowledge here is amazing. I didn't even see that his wife was wearing the same thing too.

I noticed the same emblem on both of them, my first thought was that it was a tradition badge from his ship, and that he gave one to his wife/girlfriend to wear and he wore one.

From my Navy days, we would do the same, we had brass crests that we would give our ladies, not quite an engagement gift, but something that was more than just an ordinary gift. Same size as what they are wearing, but had a pin on the back.

So it could be from a festival perhaps, or since he is all dressed up, dagger and all, a more formal meeting with the lady in the photograph and he gave her this as a gift.

I did not feel like he was dressed like this for just a festival or party, something else important enough to pull out all stops in his attire was going on I think. The dagger is what bothers me about it being a festival, just too much hardware and would look a bit strange I think.

In most memoirs I have read, this dagger was worn maybe twice in their careers and that was it--but here he is wearing it, gloves, and badges, plus the metal device hanging from his button and her suit.

So, who knows?
