Well, probably a good zinc RK I think. There were many varients of this badge and a lot of reproductions. Your question though is feeling good about the buy. This depends naturally on how much you are going to pay for it. Is this from a dealer or another collector, what about return policy.
Also need a shot of the badge from the reverse with the pin down, a full shot.
It could be a fine badge and if you pay too much, not sure you can feel good about it. If it is a small amount for the badge, not much risk, but I can't see spending one dime for something you do not like 100% no matter what the condition. Meaning, you can like something 100% even if it is not a mint badge if the price is right.
I mention return policy since I am not sure what that white stuff is on the hinge, but if zinc pest, you need to think about it and do some research on badge conservation in this forum.
Have you gone to the many dealer sites in Germany and checked the prices there against condition and against your badge? You can find their websites on this forums by typing in "best online dealers" and go from there. You can spend days looking at minesweeping badges, tombak ones included besides zinc.
You need to do the research, last thing you need is a badge you do not like after the fact. I am not saying in the end that this badge should or should not be bought, but that more information and research appears to be called for and other opinions on the badge itself from members here.
good luck, just trying to help, John

thanks trident3
i want to thank you for your feed back. here is a pic of the back. i bought this badge several years ago and very ignorant when i bought some of my collection. now i am going back and cleaning house. i do not want anything that is not original. i know i was wrong but it was a bad way to learn. if some of you could please give me some feed back i would be happy just knowing if it is good or bad. i do have 2 that would make you laugh that i picked up off of e- bay but no more. i stay away from e-bay. i use 1 person now that everyone speaks very high about in this forum but now i would like to go through my collection and clean up my mistakes and for the price it was about $150 from a seller thank you all for your time, curt. all feed back welcomeAttached Files

Rk
1. Yes, it appears to be a perfectly good RK zinc minesweeper badge.
2. Now, lets determine what the white stuff is on the hinge. Is it a powder or fungus like material or what? If it is zinc pest, we can discuss it, but try to describe it as best you can.
3. No offense to anyone on this forum, even me, hate offending myself, but, as long as you feel you need a double check or second opinion on a badge, dagger, whatever, you should post it first here. It just makes it easier if the seller is a member of this forum since I know of nobody, at least here on the kriegsmarine forum, that would object to their item being looked at first. I do that as course, meaning I post it here just to show it and see if anyone has a problem with the badge, then over to estand or a private sale. Now, I am not a big seller of badges I own, but even if I was, this is what I would do.
So take advantage of this forum, it is no weakness to ask for help first, it is strange though to buy something, then ask for an opinion when you have all the resources of this KM forum at your disposal.
4. Nobody is laughing at what you bought a long time ago or even yesterday, pre-forum, we all have laughers in stock. I did, we all or almost all did. It is the true saint that never bought a fake. In fact, we like looking at fakes, like to know what is going on out there and are useful references quite often.
So, lets see if we can get this badge up to par if possible about the white material, for a price, it is ballpark no matter what, so no worries there. You might not be able to sell it for that, but it is not far from what it is worth if the white material can be addressed.

Strange that along the life of these badges how many collectors think these badges are brass

Darrell,
Of course you are right, it is polish. Seems that somebody at some point tried to buff up the reverse. Also like you said, the RK obverse fools people in that it has a buntmetall/tombak look with the zinc catch on the reverse, makes it a bit confusing. Also the wave count business, etc, etc.
I did not think it was zinc pest, but wanted nomad to see the problem.
In any case, recommend that a used soft toothbrush carefully be used to remove the polish from the reverse and see what happens. Go very lightly, if it is polish, it will start to come off. The reverse has been messed with already, so there is not much risk with this particular badge.
All this said, it is still a good badge, just needs a little care. So what if the reverse was polished a bit.
