    Engraved U-Boat Badge Question

I have had this for many years and always wondered about the meaning of the engraving. Anyone have any idea?

    Thank you,

It is either HS 1902136 or HS 1902/36

I have just sent photos and an inquery to SHARKHUNTERS with the hope they can decypher what the owner was trying to relate. I don't know if U-Boats had Feldpost numbers, but if 1902, I would think too short and 1902136 being too long. It would be a thrill to be able to identify the U-Boat or the crew member's name.

              numbers

              Bob,

Probably his initials of course to begin with, then his number, omitting the zero at the beginning, so he was the 1902th sailor to join the Navy in 1936, his technical letter usually following the number omitted.

                Thank you, John!

Is there any further way to attempt to trace the original owner?

You can take this as far as you want really. Of course, if you only had the initials, it would be impossible. However, you have the serial number and year.

This is not impossible, but like a detective, it may take some time as you follow the lead.

                  For starts, go to:

                  http://www.ubootwaffe.net/crews/crews.cgi

You will see they 46,000 men in their data base. Contact Hubertus, his email is there, and ask for advice on how to proceed. He can certainly give you all the H.S. entries, but that is a waste of time naturally, but your man came into the Navy in 1936, might narrow the search.

I would suggest, start with Herb, send him images of the badge like what you have provided, and ask for help and direction.

If you do find your man, then it really becomes interesting in that now you have his boat, and can research that lead.

                  John

                    Hi Bob,
I think John gave the best answer, Have you tried this site? http://www.ubootwaffe.net/index.html I don't find Sharkhunters so reliable.

                    Cool badge!

                    Regards,
                    Jody
