    Stamped (pressed) KM war badges?

I've seen stamped, or pressed (i.e., the reverse of the badge is an impressed and reversed mirror image of the obverse) Black Wound Badges, IABs, GABs, and possibly Tank Assault Badges, but has anybody ever seen a Kriegsmarine war badge made in such a manner? I looked at one (Destroyer) at a show yesterday. The dealer assured me that it was original....

    Dear George,

While it seems tempting to believe that, this is a known fake. There are no hollow print KM badges. I assume it looked like that:

I thought those PICS looked familiar

        Frank!! Wake up Frank!

        George,

Bad badge! Also, check out the link address covertly shown in the PICS. I think you'll see a lot of bad things there, or as Nostradamus would say: many ill things and terrible endings.

The badges on this site seem to make it around to a lot of dealers and I recently picked up a fake from a well-known UK dealer that matches one on this site link. Be careful.

          Dear all,

As I said before, if you wonder why I know about the latest fakes all the time, just check that webadress there frequently. He also has a new one without the "2". If you do this every month or two, much less is bound to happen to you. Some of these fakes are very good. Every now and then he tucks an original, common badge like a GAB or IAB in between to gain credibility, so don´t let that confuse you. Also the cast, late war Assmann GABs with the mold ejection amrks that he offers frequently have to be fakes. They look very good but if he has one for sale exactly the same every month, something is fishy.

          Good luck!

          Cheers, Frank

            Hi everybody,

Just visited that site. Frank are you saying that appart from some IAB and GAB everything else is fake or was that just a matter of speeking?
His site has a lot in common with the RvB site. It's funny to see that they are both selling the Pilot badge with the round wreath.

              Dear Philippe,

I can´t give a blunt statement like EVERYTHING is fake there, I won´t do that. But just visit it frequently. Some fakes are evident. With the rest, just watch what gets sold and is replaced one or two, three months later with the exact same item. Maybe aged differently, but same die characteristics. After a while, you will know exactly what is fake there. I would say 98%.

After developing an eye for these fakes, you will be surprised where else you will find them.

I am no uniform/headgear/dagger specialist at all, but from what I do know about the topic, I can definitely see fakes in that field as well.

Let´s just put it this way, that site is as educational as this forum here. He doesn´t know how much GOOD his site does.

              Pics are first class too.

Just never push that "order" button!

              Cheers, Frank

                For George Stimson

I also have that destroyer badge and I think it looks better than the so called originals. Who ever made that die was very good.
You wonder if that die wasnt made late in the war when metals were scarce and it laid on a shelf or theres a great die maker out there producing some ill begotton booty badges! I have a WW 1 naval hat badge die stamped in bronze by Shott, or lets say Imperial Germany that my father brought back in 45. Ill try to post it soon. skippy

                  Hi Skippy,

There is no question man can produce even nicer looking badges than the period ones with nowadays techniques.

This fake is not a fake per se, because an original of that kind did not exist. It is a fantasy item, there is no such thing as an original hollow printed KM-badge.

                      Hi Robert,

What a blast from the past, this thread is over 11 years old; sad to see some of the old guys that are no longer in the hobby.

Nicely made fake Destroyer, marked L/4 which was not an original LDO mark but one we sometimes find on other fakes from time to time. Thanks for showing.

                            Nice, an antique thread.

Yes these hollow repros turn up from time to time. Here's a more recent thread on the same:

Yes, but where does the thread fall in regards to the thread classification table you have developed?

Let me guess and Hubert can confirm:
