    Schwerin Berlin Aux. Cruiser

Opinions on this Schwerin Berlin Aux. Cruiser. Especially the finish. I think it is a good badge, the finish I have a question about. Maybe the flash, it does not look repainted, so probably OK in all respects.

Other viewpoints might confirm my evaluation of this badge.

      Aux Cruiser

      Hello John,
From what I can see it looks fine to me. I have the exact same badge with maker mark and my badge has more of a lemon yellow type finish, if that makes sense. Is your finish more of this type of color?

Very tough to find with a maker mark.

      Regards,
      Jody

        Hi John,

I agree, no questions on authenticity.

From the images, the reverse looks great - aged and slightly worn/darkened fire-gilt imo, exactly as it should be.

The obverse is much harder to judge from this image though. Doesn't really look like fire-gilt from the image, so I'm wondering how much wear to the gilt has taken place and /or whether it's been polished. I don't really see evident of refinishing on this one.

        Regards
        Mike

I am with Mike on this one. A great badge but possible cleaning to obverse. Hard to say for sure from pics. A hard to get piece no matter what. best wishes,

I wish I had this in hand, but I do not. I have tried to post the obverse again, bigger this time, perhaps we can make a better determination of this badge. I guess I am tilting to the badge being polished, does the globe look different from normal SB AC globes? In other words, has the shading changed in some way? This is a tough one I think, in hand, no problem. I will get other images but this is the best I have for now.

                  Lorenzo's badge

For comparison, the badge posted by Lorenzo. It just does not look the same to me on the obverse. Might be the camera flash, but still looks odd (my example) or maybe I am just seeing things.

                    Lorenzo badge part 2

OK, before I beat this to death, last image of Lorenzo's badge. I still think the one I posted might have been polished, but I have nothing to compare it to. In other words, I have no images of a polished tombak since I think few people would do this. However, it might have been done on this one. Lorenzo's globe looks darker, his wreath is darker too.

Like Mike and Jeff said, something looks a bit off, but I am not completely sure. Just that I tend to agree with them, good badge, possible polished obverse.

                      Hi John,

Would have replied again earlier but Saturday morning = kids sport!

He's an annotated ovberse of my tombak Schwerin Berlin marked example. It's probably a slightly later example as it has a flat-based nickel-silver "C" catch.

Yellow arrows point to areas where the fire-gilt remains. The obverse gilding is probably up around the 70% mark.

Red arrows point to worn areas of fire-gilt which now have a polished appearance - the right of the sail (looks like Lorenzo's badge shown the same effect here, ie rougher matt fire-gilt to the left of the mast but smooth/polished to the right - not in a straight line but blurry and curved), outer (higher) parts of most leaves, eagles chest and top edge of eagle's wings - some of these areas may (or may not) have originally been burnished.

Brown arrow pointing to the wreath tie is patinaed bare tombak.

Basically the lighter yellow/gold areas are matt fire-gilt, the darker gold areas are smooth/polished and the yellow brown areas are bare metal. The example you've imaged looks more like near-100% smooth/polished - until better images come along!

                      Regards
                      Mike

The other big difference I see is the water areas, especially the Mediterranean, much darker. I am sure if you polished the globe, these darker areas would come out, further, normal wear could not get into the these recessed areas of water since the continents would protect them, but in my case, the entire globe is the same in regards to bodies of waters.

Also look under the bow wave. It is dark on yours and Lorenzo's example.

Thanks for the detailed example you provided. John

This is courtesy of Rob, I have indicated the differences in the pennants. My example is the only one so far that has a pennant like this.
