    U-Boat Tradition Badge

Here is a vet-acquired item which I believe to be a WW2 "U-Boot Traditions-Abzeichen". I tried researching this on the Forum but found no applicable results. It looks to have possibly been hand-made on-board.

Can anyone please confirm for me that it is, indeed, a U-Boat tradition badge and which U-Boat used this symbol, as well as any other details that might be pertinent?

    Thanks,
    John

    John,

    how big is this.
Like for a cap or something?
Can you lay a coin or a ruler next to it for some perspective?

There are a couple of excellent books out there, alas I do not have one.

I believe these are called "Mallings" (sp.) or similar. If we could find out you could probably google it.

heres a quick link to the german Uboot page with a short article about terret paintings.

Thanks, Skip. I do not have the badge at hand, but can say that it was a small size for affixing to a cap. The holes shown are presumably for stitching it to the hat.

In the text of the first site (U-Boot-Greywolf) that you posted, the "panther" (which appears to be what this badge represents) is mentioned as being one of the symbols used for the conning tower (and presumably therefore for a cap).

I have seen a reference book purportedly listing and explaining all of the known symbols, but alas do not have it either.

      Thanks,
      John

Possibly U-861, the profile of the Panther looks about right but the reference also shows this holding the world (Globe)

Not necessarily a U-boat related badge. Other ships besides u-boats had informal or unofficial 'traditions' badges also. I have not been able to find this exact badge in the "U-Boat Emblems of World War II, 1939-1945" by Georg Hogel.

Rob correctly mentioned U-861 as being close but with a very prominent globe as part of the design.
