      Hi Yuri,

It looks like an early, genuine example to me. Heavily worn but appears to retain about 50% of the gilt finish. Not sure what's happened to the eagle's head though - ? an attempt to de-nazify it or simply badly damaged?

I have seen variations of the logo on these badges. Can anyone else attest to this observation?

          Hi Yuri,

I've seen VERY minor variations in the maker's mark on some later genuine zinc badges. Variations in the style of the maker's mark on tombak badges would be highly suspect, however variations in the LOCATION of the maker's mark I don't have a problem with (and no, I do not believe a second set of dies is required to explain this variation in location). If you're referring to maker's marking on Schwerin Destroyer's Badges that are very regular, even, and a little taller than the marking shown, you're thinking about the "Cave Creek Specials".

No, I'm talking about the same uneven letters, but "differently" uneven. Look at the "N" in SCHWERIN, it is placed a bit higher in relation to the "I", now look at some of the other Tombak Schwerins from some previous threads, the "N" is a bit lower than the "I".

Hi Yuri. Here is a comparison to your badge and mine. They look very similar and I would have to say that yours is authentic with some "wear" to it. I see what you mean about the mark. It has very, very tiny differences compared to mine...however that may be due to different camera angles and to "wear" that is on your badge. The camera angle on my mark is coming slightly from the bottom which may be giving it a slightly different appearance. BUT...they DO LOOK slightly different.

Larry, take a look at the "E" in SCHWERIN. The bottom of the letter is almost completely missing the serrif on my badge, but is very present on yours.

Yours looks a lot more like mine!!!

Is it safe to say that there were 2 variations to the Schwerin Tombak Destroyer Badge logo?

That's interesting...first time I've ever noticed. I checked my picture files and I see that the 1st pattern E-boat badge does NOT have the serif on the bottom of the E. The Schwerin Coastal Artillery DOES have the serif on the E. I don't have a good scan of the Auxiliary Cruiser badge, but the scans I have look like the E has a small serif.

                        Hi Guys,

I am with Mike K on this one. Yuri, your badge looks to be an early one to me, the serif on the "E" is very well struck, my badge looks the same as Lorenzo's where the "E" is slightly less defined but still an early one in Buntmetall. As suggested elsewhere the die seems not to have been cleaned after so many stampings.

                        Regards,

                        Anthony

Here is the back. If anybody reading this thread can tell me how to get a close up with a scanner of the makers mark please do so, as this is the best I can do at the moment.

                          Regards,

                              Anthony,

Your logo looks like Lorenzo's, with the bottom of the "N" in SCHWERIN being lower than the bottom of the "I".
