U-boat badge...opinions and maker?

This has been floating on (pardon the pun) e-stand for a while now and I'd like an opinion please as to its maker.

Hi this is a strange one for me, looks like a wernstein but have never seen one with a solid area between the wings, eagles chest looks quite defined also. The revere hinge is typical for this maker but the postion of the catch is wrong (maybe replaced or late war, not one i have encountered)and the pin looks a little strange, most have blunt ends. Strange, but lets see what others make of it. All the best

My instinct, since I have not seen this before, is that it is a good zinc h. wernstein variant. Do not think the catch moved, seems like it was made this way on this one. The obverse is off from anything I have seen, but the hinge, hinge plate and catch makes me tilt to unknown Wernstein variant.

Can we see a shot of the back of that one? Looks to be the same type as the rsre hollow ones you see occasionally.

but yours is a well known fake. Has absolutly nothing in common with a Schwerin UBoot badge.

Were did all these badges come from, one dealer?

Well Skip- I came across a collection from a collector here in NYC who passed away. This is not my field of interest (medals) so I cannot comment really. Out of 100 I'm gonna guess at this point about 50 percent are probably bad...I have no further history on these items to share with you all. I will continue to post what I have for comments. If something is good, then great, if not, no problem.

ok back to my badge FYI I got this opinion from Gordon Williamson and have since bought the badge...thanks Gord and everyone.

Yes, its a Wernstein. My U-Boat book from Bender will show both types, (i.e. with the catch mounted in the centre and at the base of the wreath, both are known and accepted forms of this badge).
