    U BOAT mm4 ?

    Hi guys,
I have this u boat since some time, but as I'm not an expert on U-boat badges, I hope it is a good one?
    It's marked "4" for Steinhauer & Luck"
    Any help is welcome.
    Thanks,
    Marc

        Hi Marc

This is a tough badge - first thing that hit me was that the pin loks like a Floch copy pin, but then again the pin assembly looks like it has been soldered recently maybe a fake pin was the easiest to get. The obverse tells me that this badge is either a really worn one or a cast copy because the lack of details. Only good sign on this badge is the remains of bronce/gold finnish on the reverse.

If I were you I would hold on to my mony, eventhough it might be original its just to ugly.

        Cheers Thomas

          Hi Marc

I made a quick search on Steinhauer and L******252;ck U-boat and this turned up I have compared them - I would conclude that yours is not a Steinhauer - hmm - don't have time now, need to log off and sit in the sofa with the wife!

          Cheers Thomas

            Hello Marc

The U-Boat badge posted by Thomas as a comparison to yours is mine, I therefore have additional pictures which I will share with you for your consideration. Note, the maker mark on my badge is not on the pin, but on the reverse of the badge itself. The pin is also different as is the eagle to mention a couple more differences from your badge. The ultimate conclusion from the forum was that my badge was original, but one can not be 100% sure. What concerns me most about your badge is the pin and its Floch like appearance near the hinge. My first photo shows a close-up of the maker mark.

            Best Regards
            Mike

                      Hi Marc,

Bit of a strange one to say the least.

This is the third U-boat I see with a mm 4. All badges are of a different design and at the same time S&L isn't a known U-Boat badge maker.

The design of your badge is the Schwerin/Deumer type but it doesn't come close in terms of detailing to any of these makers. The set-ups is closest to the Deumer badges but not a perfect match and the cut-out is completely different from anything I have ever seen on a u-boat. On the other hand the aging looks believable with the pin retaining its bright gold finish.

Here is a link to some other Deumer U-Boats

Here is mine. When I bought it, it had large spots of zinc pest on the front as well on the back. These have been treated with vaseline, but the dark spots still indicate the former corrosion. It has a 4 on the pin.
