New high end Schwerin Coast Art fake?

This looks very close in many ways, but I am not sure about this one. Two reverse views attached. I have had to crop them a bit to get them down in file size.

When you first look at it, it looks OK. But when you really compare it with known good CA examples, the New Times Roman font seems too modern to me.

The very end of the downsweeping "R" looks too thin for one thing as compared with the slightly fatter part of the R on a real one. Same with the E. The little points at the ends of the E almost touch the horizontal line of the E. This is not the case with a real one.

Maybe I am seeing things, but this looks too good to me. Also barrel looks too thin on the reverse.

    What do you think.

I also noticed that badge and I had to double and triple check it. Your points on the mark are well taken...I also noted that the "B" in Berlin does not line up the same as on an original.

The badge might be good, but would really need to get this badge in-hand to be sure, but if it is fake it is the BEST reproduction I have seen and a portent on bad things to come.

            badge

It also sold for only 250 US by a dealer. A mint SB CA badge would not be sold by a dealer for such an amount I think, maybe twice that.

Also Lorenzo, sent you a PM, but will ask here also, what photo software are you using to magnify then put side by side the images.

Hi Guys have to say im not to keen on this one also. Have to say the pics aren't the best but Eagles head looks wrong, waves of the water look wrong. Dont care much for the blobs. And there are slight differences in the wreath to known originals. I would say not one for me, but interesting to see what others make of it. All the best

I had to look at it a couple of times also. I agree likely a new generation of fakes.

From the photos it looks quite convincing, hopefully in hand it may be easier to spot. The back looks a little blue.

Well done on the comparison John

                      Hi,

Guys, from the images I disagree with what's been said so far. I think slightly off center photos and reflections are causing some misinterpretations. I've done my own image manipulation (rotating the badge to vertical, making it semi-transparent and overlaying it with my own example) and I am convinced that the reverse profile (eagle, barrel, inner and outer wreath) is an excellent, if not exact, match with my own genuine example. From what I can see, the obverse detail is actually extremely good and conforms to known originals - imo the obverse of the eagles head is not imaged well enough to state it is different from originals. Re the maker mark and the "blobs". I think this is an artifact of the seller's image being enlarged and losing detail. Did anyone notice that the main pin is the correct length for a genuine example (and has a spot of gold paint on the tip, which I've seen on other Schwerin badges before), that the badge has the correct die characteristic to the right of the obverse lower right eagles wing tip and that on the reverse wave profile (above maker mark, reverse left sid eof the gun) there is the rough edge found original later tombak badges indicating die striking/trimming?

I know where this badge is coming from and I know what the seller's other offerings are like. My biggest question is whether the badge imaged is the badge that was actually sold.

Until a hands-on is possible and measurements are known, I am certainly giving this one the benefit of the doubt. Imo, it is way too good for a casting and imo it is NOT an improved "Cave Creek" special.

                      Regards
                      Mike K

PS: Maybe I should add some annotated images?
                      Regards
                      Mike

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!

I just copied it from the website. I assume it is the same badge that was sold.

                          Mike,

I think we are all hoping this is real. If it is a skillful reproduction, then we have problems coming, maybe they are coming anyway. While the Coastal Artillery Badge is not one of the most popular badges in the KM group, it is a very complex piece of art in itself and if this can be copied, any of them can.

If you have annotated images to address your opinion, I think it would be great.

                          John

                            Hi,

What I was questioning here was whether the seller has loaded pics of an original badge as "bait", only to actually send off a repro badge to the buyer.

Some comparison pics will follow. Note that the red circles are either die "characteristics" or areas of significant difference with the Cave Creek SpecialCoastal Artillery repro, the best Schwerin repro I am currently aware of (but still easy to pick).

                            Regards
                            Mke K

First, an obverse - note that the angle of the website pic makes an image overlay pretty difficult.
