      Hi Frank,

I'm sure it's tombak! This is what I ment about the catch... it's also with a nice round grey undersurface...
btw, yours is one stunning example (wanna trade for a not so often seen model with second pattern rivet )

Ok, I see what you mean. It indeed does not look refinished/repainted around the catch. Maybe somebody "cleaned" the badge with steel wool until it took on that strange hue?
Weird badge, but definitely not worth to scratch your head over it. Definitely messed with in SOME way.
        Cheers, Frank

IMO this badge has been tarnished, but now repainted, this gave the badge a sparkling finish and a bit of a darker colour. That would also expain the fingerprint I think...
Fron the globe I still don't know what to think, it's deffinatly replaced, I can see the copper coloured material from under the gray, don't know what that is...
          Kind regards,
          Giel

            Dear Giel,

Probably the globe is made from Cupal then, I just assumed it is pure Aluminium, because mine is immaculate.

But I still insist, bring it back, you will want one like mine one day.
            Cheers, Frank

                Dear Giel,

Skip said it best, if you constantly feel the need to upgrade a badge, you might as well not have it at all.
                Cheers, Frank

                  Hi Frank,

That's what flews out of it. If I can get convinced here to keep it, I won't have the feeling to upgrade at all, as I like lightly worn items...
                  Kind regards,
                  Giel

                    Hi Giel,

I have been watching your thread and feel a bit of disappointment for you, for all of us, that had hoped it was a keeper.

If I was in your shoes, I would heed the advice already given. When I get a badge that I have to scrutinize, and in my mind, try to convince myself of all the 'what ifs' and 'whys', I have just learned to give it up. But that is me. As already mentioned, a worn badge with age is great. But the possibility of tampered with, turns me right off.

If I get a badge that I'm not sure about, everytime I look at it, all the 'questions' pop back into my head. Save your hard earned money. When the right one comes along, you'll feel great!

                    Regards,
                    Mark

Here is mine. I waited along time for it. If you look closely, you will see that the globe is slightly 'off centered'. But from the factory. I was able to overlook that detail, as the rest of the badge is textbook, including the fire-gilt finish. Same as Franks.

Thanks Mark I'll return it and already mailed the seller. On my way to a great one I would say. I do think this is the nicest naval award of them all, and with your illustration Mark, and ofcourse Franks one I'll be off to my road to a minty one.

                      Thanks again all of you
                      Kind regards,
                      Giel

                        Good luck in your search

Hopefully in the near future you will be posting a "minty" one.

                        regards
