    u-boat opinion nedded!!

    HI to all

I'm about to buy this badge. Can enyone tell me if this one is an oryginal piece and who made it. Doesn't really fallow any of the u-boat patters I've seen.
here are the links to the pics:

I don't like it. Look at the casting line running along the edge and the funky hinge.

Indeed a bit of a strange one. From the obverse it looks very good but the reverse contours are very very soft. Also the pin is something I have never seen, it tries to imitate something but I'm not sure what.

I´d pass on that one if I was you. Front looks quiet good but the rear shows what I think are the soft edges from casting.

Phil, the pin is trying to imitate the Deschler pin and hinge that you find on their "1" EK1s

Not the best pics I have ever done but you get the idea.

What are your thoughts on the hinge? It looks like one of those funky hollow hinges that has been improved.

            Don,

while such hollow hinges are generally unacceptable on war badges there are certain EK1s that utilise an acceptable type of hollow hinge. "1" and "26" come to mind.
However they do not look like the type of hollow hinges you find on 57 awards and those cave creek specials.

Have a look at the hinge on the EK1 thread I posted a link to, its the same sort as on this UBoot.

I am not so sure this badge is bad. Check this one out, posted by Giel some time ago. It also features the Deschler EK pin and the close ups make it appear quite believable. I assume it is a badge of the very same kind.

Hi Adam and welcome to the forum!

As to your badge, I really don't like it, the casting line is most concerning however I am no expert. My only suggestion is to wait for a textbook example and purchase that one. The badge you have posted may very well be original, but one cannot be sure. Good luck.

                      Best Regards
                      Mike

Well looking at the close-up of the hinge Frank just posted I tend to agree that we schouldn't condemn this badge.

Like I wrote the obverse looks very good and in fact is rasor sharp and this in sharp contrast with the soft look of the reverse. Looked upon from the front the deckgun has a perfect shape but looked upon from the reverse it's a complete mess. Very strang effect.

Just had a closer look at my Deschler KVK. Not only the pin but also the hinge is a perfect match. And if you would put a base plate under it the catch also would match the one used on the U-boat.

So what is this a Deschler U-Boat badge

Looks like a shear line instead of a molding line to me. The edges are quite crisp IMO. I don't think it is a casting.

                            For what it's worth.

I still don´t like that reverse outline though.
Still the pin/hinge sure look like the Deschler and going from their EK1 they wer´nt that hot quality wise.
So what are we saying, are we willing to accept it as an authentic one?
