Why are these badges so much more expensive relative to say the U-Boat badge? Where less produced?

It´s depends on if it´s the first version or the second. First version are often made in Tombak and the second are made in zink.

Depands on the maker. As Steve has said 1st pattern tombak Schwerins are the most desirable but 2nd pattern AS in triangle zincers are more desirable than 1st pattern zinc S&Ls since there is a risk that some of them could be made post war.
