    Schwerin U-boat Badge Opinions Required

    Hi,

I need some independent opinions (I have expressed my own already) on the attached Schwerin U-boat badge images. The badge measures 38.6 x 47.8 mm and weighs 19.80 g. I need to state that this badge comes directly from the estate of the German veteran who owned it. All comments and observations will be appreciated, by myself and the owner. If people want to post other examples then that would also be appreciated.

    Regards
    Mike K

    SCHWERIN?

This badge is not like any Schwerin U-Boat badge I have ever seen. The pin, hinge block, catch (ugh!!) are terrible. The shape of the submarine is not of the type Schwerin badges have.

I am with Bill, nothing is right on this badge. From the staybright mock fire guilding finish to the maker´s mark.

Do I see this right: There seems to be an area on the obverse (lower part of the wreath band and lowest edge of badge) that has totally blurry detail and is actually missing base metal?

        Cheers, Frank H.

          Hi

Thanks for the replies so far - keep them coming - the more the better.

Frank, your observations are correct. There is a large blob to the right of the "X" tie (obverse) and "indentations" above and below the catch region.

              Dear Ron,

But don´t confuse it with the Foerster & Barth pin, which is quite similar. Catch is very different though. See their GAB here (marked L/21):

                Hi Frank,

The hinge is just like the one in the first picture, the pin is real close and the catch is exactly the same. No mistake about it.

For the record, here is a U-Boat Badge by Foerster and Barth, as referred to by Frank, the pin marked L/21 in the impressed square near the catch.

I don't think the hinge is anything like the first badge that Mike posted either.

Does anybody know if L/21 made an unmarked U-boat Badge with the same type pin etc, less the marking?

The pin (although shorter) and hinge looks like those on my 1957 Luftwaffe badges.

                        Regards ...
