Looking at some reference pictures of these from know sources, there seems to be a variety of ways of how they were made, some seem to be die struck from plate such as the polar bear, some cast in aluminium etc.
Many were made from brass plate and I assumed that these were individually made by the sailors during down time on the boat, hence although made to a defined pattern they should all be slightly different.
I have recently seen a couple of this type of badge however there were characteristics / markings which clearly defined that they were struck from some sort of a die. Will try and post some pics later when I sort them out but does anyone have any other information or views?
A difficult subject I know but maybe someone has studied this in depth.
