Wait for the experts but it looks like a late 2nd pattern Deumer I have also with the silver finish gone. I later found a better one but I always liked the wear/age
on this one.

As JC says, this is a fine original later-war Deumer. Not too much original silver finish remaining unfortunately, but nice original for sure.

Your badge has had a tough life. You may want to consider treating it with vaseline to stop anymore zinc corrosion.

Am I "seeing things" or am I right in thinking this badge was plated/coated with another type of metal like cupal is (copper over aluminum) except in this case its ??? over zink? Evident on Peter's back pictures but you can also see a chip of the top layer missing on the front of mine

I agree, lots of copper coated zink stuff out there that you can usually pick out of a lot easily because the copper coating seals the zink in and prevents it from attacking the outer finish (bubbling etc.) not to mention the coppery undertone. I even have a brass plated zink summer unform eagle made by Rudolf Karneth where the zink is seeping through the brass in a few needle prick holes! However, in both GABs shown here there is very little (if any) silver finish left at all which isnt typical of copper coated pieces and the top (plated?) layer looks denser & better quality than the inner core which looks like a porous black crud from the picts.

Not sure its the correct explanation but any chance that this maker would attempt to plate late pot metal badges with a better quality feinzink (or some alloy) so they dont go to seed so quickly as uncoated pot metal ones would?

Attached are 3 more GABs by this maker to compare:

1) Left: 1st pattern hollow stamped tombac
2) Centre: 1st pattern hollow stamped zink (no trace of copper: true "feinzink"?)
3) Right: 2nd pattern solid back zink (which appears to have been copper coated)
