    Hollow F&CL IAB

    Hello,
Posting this IAB that I just bought, originally posted in this thread - http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru....php?t=1028506. I'm posting it here to try to show the finish a little better and show more details, though I'm not sure I did so well with my poor photography skills. The first two shots of the obverse are taken indoors with an Ott light shaded by a piece of paper to try to cut down on the glare while the rest of the shots are in full sunlight. Though it looks almost bronze in the pictures, in hand it appears like a toned silver wash on the front with a white wash to the reverse. The wear to the highlights are gray, though not quite a flat gray like some of the late war zinc. I'm no expert, but I think it is a higher quality zinc with maybe a tombak or copper wash applied to the obverse before the silver wash was applied. What do you all think?
    Thank you,
    Dale

    Hi Dale,

beautiful badge. Judging finish is hard on these pictures but i believe that one is a silver grade. I don't see any signs of a copper undercoating, i think it's a high quality zinc badge in very good condition.

Beautiful early FCL Dale. The later ones had the sprayed finish, yours looks like it indeed received a faint copper or tombak coating.
      Kind regards,
      Giel

        Hi Dale,

Nice looking F&CL, great detail and some good finish left.

I tend to agree with Jelle, its a zinker with toned silver finish on it (no bronze undercoating).

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

I'll try to remember to bring it to the SoS next month so y'all can see it in hand. I really need to make a shadow box so I can make good photos.

            Very Nice IAB!

I remember some of the guys on the WRF use a scanner instead of camera which actually looks really good. I have not tried it yet

In my experience light boxes can be more trouble than they are worth.

              Dale,
A nice example for sure. It has always bugged me that this company did not utilize the design of the eagles head that was used on their GAB. I have always found that the so called "art decco" style of head much more appealing.

You're right, Chet, it would look better as this eagle's head appears (to me) a little undersized for the body. So far a GAB from this maker has eluded me.

                  Hi Dale

To me it looks like a nice silver zincer, but the obverse has picked up a nice patina over time.

                  regards
