Well on closer examination there are much more difference in the oakleave design, compared to this solid version. So for sure not comming from the same die.

So what do we have here: 2 close but different dies just like it is the case with the 7 wheel PAB's that most likely also were produced by OM?

      Guys,

Actually I have two of those, both Tombak. One is with the leaf, one is without it. I guess it was finished deliberatley, just as the swastika area. Check the swaz/left wing area for more differences. These differences are typical for the OM GABs, PABs and IABs.

          Hello Philippe,

i think so, because of the cutout swaz. As we can see on the closup, the cutout was made by stamping with the die and not by manual work.

So there must be another die for the massive pieces.

What's your opinion about the missing oak leaves Philippe ?

Is it a fake because of that or is it another die ?

            Hi AK ,

Not necessarily! The one your refering to is a Vienna design IAB and has nothing to do with the one your posted.

It will be interesting to compare the design of buntmetall examples. Are they matching your design or the solid design. If they still feature that piece of oakleave, damage to the die would be the most logical explaination. If not it only proofs that the two dies where competely different from the start.

@Philippe: slightly different obverse dies for hollow and massive versions are not unusual, with the GABs I see this quite often. The important thing is that the design is kept and has the same artist's handwriting.

                Dear Frank,

Well after looking at the pics you just posted it's obviuos that there was a third option: handfinishing. It's also obvious that these early badges shared the same die as the one used for AK's example.

Only one thing I would like to know now. Is AK's badge also a buntmetall example. The ammount of handfinishing for sure is acceptable on an early BM badge but to me would be strange to encounter on a zinker

Hi Ak, that is a really nice badge . I had no idea who made it even after looking and comparing files. Good thing we got experts, I learn something everyday on this forum
