Close Combat Clasp - Silver center!

    Hi guys,

You may have seen my post about Manfred Dorr's new updated book on the recipients of the Close Combat Clasp in Gold:

    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru....php?t=1016321

There is a very interesting period document in the book, showing correspondence from the Army Personel Office regarding the creation of a Gold Presentation Clasp with Silver Center!! The letter was written on January 18th, 1945 and that Juncker produced a single example and submitted it for review and approval. It was presented to Hitler on January 21st, and approved for production, but that no other example was produced.

This was the first time I am seeing or even hearing about such a modification to the gold close combat clasp and really excellent that Manfred Dorr was able to discover such a period document. Amazing!

          Hi Tom,

very interesting! Is there other information in the document? Like award criteria? I wonder if it was meant as a higher grade than the regular gold CCC.

The original document also states that a bronze CCC with silver center was also produced. For both, bronze and silver CCC it was planned to replace the awarded pieces with the new version. For the bronze CCC that might have been difficult due to the award numbers, but for the gold version it was proposed since feasible, the document says. (Nothing better than original documents!)

              Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies. I always find it interesting to see what was contemplated, especially at such a late stage of the war. You would think they would have had more pressing matters with Germany crumbling on all fronts, yet they were still going about business as usual!

The book is not in English, only German but honestly that is not much of a deterant if you know a little German as it mainly lists the recipients of the CCC in Gold along with the date in which they received it, and other awards they were issued such as the EK, RK, DK, etc. Also has many, many pictures of the recipients, many of them wearing the close combat clasp so I find it an excellent reference for Germany's highest combat decoration.

Jelle, the document doesn't state what the redesign would be for so we can only guess. My personal thought is that it was an attempt to make the clasp stand out on the unfiorm a little more.

A higher grade is also possibly ofcourse. Hard to fathom the need for more than 50 days of hand to hand combat as so few survived that long, only about 750+/- out of 19 million who served!
