Nice original Schickle for sure, just heavily polished which gives it a slightly weird look.

Doesn't really devalue it too much IMO, the patina will come back over time.
Light polish marks on the surface are a good way to tell its been heavily cleaned, and also a very uniform look to it is another sign.

It'll come back, I assure you. Just try to leave it somewhere not in an airtight container or plastic bag and it'll come back in a few years. Below is a link to the first flak badge I ever bought that had a very dark, almost black patina to it. I dipped it in silver polish and gave it a light rub with a cotton ball and it was bright and shiny, but 15 years later you can see it was much darker.

There is no trace of tombak peeping through on the upper parts.

Giel, Jelle: Just had this under the loupe and not a trace of tombac base to be seen on the edges. My not-so-trained eye took the lack of that to mean it was mint tombac.

This badge is very hard to give a correct evaluation.
Badge is surely in a worn condition and shows signs of wear.
Good indicator for that are the acorns.
This badge has two faces, the acorns on the left are worn off and have a rather dull appearance and the acorns on the right show the same wear but are shiny.
Because the detail and finish is worn off, it's basemetal you see. I wonder if you can give naked zinc that appearance by polishing it.Comment

It looks like nickel silver to me as well. Try some shots in natural sunlight to see if that helps, especially if you can get some shots showing what looks like dark patina in the crevices of the acorns and pebbled leaves. It may just be the shadows created by your photos.

The black you see is definitely not shadow but dark patina.Comment
