    Apb

    Hi!

My buddy posted this in an inappropriate forum. I was asked to repost the pics in the appropriate location for him.

He would like to know, original or not?

    Best Wishes,

    Bob
The file is too large, could I send it to someone to re-size?
    Thanks!

        Dear Bob,

In my opinion, the base of the badge does not look bad. The setup seems a bit weird, but that might be the picture. E.g. is there a hinge plate under the hinge? I guess so. Same thing about the catch, catchplate present?
The "cut" is missing and the hilt is not twisted.

More detailed pics of the setup and the front details (snakes, skull) might help to be sure.
        Cheers, Frank

Thank you very much Frank and Gerd!

Unfortunately a friend is working as a middle man on a collection which this is part of. Therefore I am not able to get more pictures yet, although I instructed my friend to buy a scanner! Most of the material is original but I have question to a few pieces. So please, cross your fingers for me!

          Best Wishes,

          Bob

PS- I am eagerly awaiting for your book as many of us are!

            Hi all,

Sorry for the late reply. I have been out of town for about three weeks.
I don't have much to add to what has already been said.
I would agree totally with most of what has been said here.
I agree that the details of the oak leaves, sword hilt, and skull are certainly
lacking in the sharpness of an original badge that is in good condition.
However, I also know that there are two things that should be taken into consideration in this case, that could be the reason for the lack of detail in these areas besides it being a reproduction.
One, is the possibility of this badge just being heavily corroded.
Often, this happens on late war badges and can destroy much of the details
and will look similar to this. Secondly, the picture quality doesn't help.
The color of the material looks a bit off, but that could also be due to the photography.

Anyway, I think that we will just have to see much better close-up pictures to possibly be able to tell for sure and it could go either way.

            Best,
            Chris

              Bob,
Just woke up. Gut feeling..... I don't like it. After a cup of coffee, I'll reply more.

                Bob,

OK. Now, all the comments from Frank and Chris are valid. It may sound like a contradiction of terms, but, to me the obverse of the badge lacks detail, and the reverse shows too much clean ness. The front reveals much aging while the rear still shows manufacturing sharpness. The tip of the pin appears very sharp and pointed. The hinge, pin & catch look new. The casting lines on the reverse edge of the badge are clean and symmetrical. I just get a gut feeling of 'something is amiss'.

As I look at it more, maybe a better explanation will come to mind. As always, I hope I'm wrong and that your friend has a good APB in his hands.

I would tend to say original, but also find the pin a bit shiny. Like the broncetraces on the reverse. Much better pictures needed.

                    Cheers Thomas
