    Variant Unknown #12 GAB

    Hello,
I recently purchased this from the daughter and son-in-law of a WW2 vet. It and other of his souvenirs were found in the box he had mailed it home in from NYC in December of 1945 when he returned from overseas. It is the same variant with a block hinge as shown by Tom in this thread - http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ht=unknown+gab. It is in excellent condition with most of the original white frosting and the silver highlights. I took pictures from the side to show where the silver finish has bubbled up, I guess from having bubbles caused by the underlying zinc? Unfortunately my photography skills don't do it justice. I took two sets of photos, one outside in heavy overcast and the other inside under my wife's Ott light. Maybe in the future I'll get a chance to take better photos in full sunlight, but guess these will have to do for now.
    Thank you,
    Dale

A beauty Dale! Great condition, with most of its original white frosted finish intact. Great addition.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

Very nice photos and character. Yes they plated the zinc, here are my 2 examples with copper. This was a big-time manufacturer and I'm seeing some evolution of the die in our 3 examples. Specifically, the eyeball/eyebrow seems to change from a perfect circle to a half circle and thicker brow.

Nice ones as well, Tony, and you're right, I see a change in the eye and brow. Also, it appears that the line dividing the upper and lower beak changed some as well.
