I have these two examples.The thing that is interesting me is the line at 12oclock above the ball hinge,behind the birds head is this as a result of two different dies having been used?. all the best Gary

Maybe you could post close up pics of the first ones hinge area.
I have not seen that before but suspect this is not part of the original die. Maybe the pin was trapped somehow while the ball hinge was crimped in?? Something along those lines as the groove looks to be the width of the pin and starts at the ball hinge.
When you open up the pin, does it line up perfectly with the groove?

Hi Bruce.
With the JFS IAB it looks like the hinge does not get modified after being crimped in. So I am assuming you think that at the time the small cut out in the circular raised hinge crimp was created, the back of the badge was cut also, in a similar fashion to the Juncker badges mentioned in the link you posted.
I had not really thought about the small cut out in the crimp before on these JFS IABs. Most JFS IABs do not have it. But I guess at some stage some badges were produced so that the pin can be completely opened, unlike the IABs without the cut, which make them difficult to scan with the pin open

......raising the proposition of the groove allowing the pin a greater range of opening does seem to make sense.
I also wondered(as an after thought) whether the groove was incorporated into the die at some later point of the manufacturing process. I haven't had a grooved JFS IAB in hand to check.
