Just wondering about this R.S. CCC, the backing edges of the plate are different from what I commonly see on R.S. pieces, is this a confirmed variant?

One is a square crimp and one is a rectangular crimp, both are acceptable.

Yes, I agree with Ralph that both are acceptable for wartime Souvals.
However, the top example has a replaced backplate, not original.
The bottom one from Epic has an original correct backplate.
