Maker marked or not ?

Just wanted to know what everyones thoughts are on maker marked badges against non maker marked, why are the maker marked badges more desireable ?


Is it better resale or another reason ?

I don't fully agree with your statement that marked badges are more desirable....
if you see two identical badges from the same maker, one marked other unmarked, i'm sure most collectors would prefer the marked example. Just gives that little extra touch. There are many desirable badges that are unmarked and these can fetch higher prices than any marked examples (early meybauer, ns juncker, early gwl iab/gab, petz lorenz...) Just to name a few.
It's nice to have a maker mark, but badges without are not less desirable.

Maker Marks are by no means a way of telling if a badge is real or not IMO there are just as many or even more fakes with maker marks that are bogus. Some of the nicest earliest quality pieces are unmarked and many collectors do not give them the justice they deserve. To a true collector it just matters if the badge is authentic not marked or unmarked. This seems to speak true of the hollow stamped badges too some people think they are crude and flimsy whereas some of the early stamped ones in Tombac or Nickel Silver are the most beautiful IMO, it is all in the eye of the beholder and what they prefer but to me it doesn't matter either way.

I agree with all who have left a comment here.
Personally for me, when choosing between two signs in good condition, a sign with a mark will be more desired. But it's only - if the sign had a variant with and without stigma-for example, radio operators J D A (without a stigma), the general storm sign Wurster (without stigma).
For me, in this case, the absence of a mark is like an unfinished sign.
But if the sign is in very good condition for lack of stigma, you can close your eyes. :-)

As recently as the late 90's and early 2000's a almost all badges priced for retail sale used the criteria of condition to estimate value. So, you had Excellent condition = more $, good condition = less money, and so on.

Is not it so that the badges that were granted, they are not signed or signed of producer or have a PKZ number, and those purchased on the secondary market are signed with the LDO number?

I totally agree with you. But here's an example: I put 2 ostmedaillen on sell, 1 marked, 1 unmarked. The marked one always goes faster, even it's more expensive! Because a lot a people think that a marking on a ring gives more authenticity.
And you can find people sometimes who think unmarked are not good!

......To tell the truth, I personally love the fact that unmarked, original Third Reich souvenirs sell for less than those with maker marks. The only side of my badges that go on display are the obverse. I don't hide my collectibles in a vault.


And, many unmarked badges are far nicer in appearance than their maker marked counterparts. One could use Juncker PAB's for imstance.

For me, it just adds more to the story of the badge. I can’t put my finger on it exactly but I remember how cool I thought it was seeing the Assman “A” on the back of the flak badge and on the eagle as well. To this day I would pay more for the double mark!

As long as its a pre may 1945 original, I wouldn't care if it were maker marked or not. Just a personal preference. Martin.
