    Post Refinished Warbadges

    Hello all,

Recently there has been some discussion on refinished warbadges. I ask you all to post photos of any that are considered refinished so all may understand how to identify them. Also, what are the telltale signs of refinishing we should look for?

    Thanks!
    Marc

One BIG clue is when you have a pristine finish over areas that are obviously worn.

        Thanks Don,
It is obvious on that badge. What about others? I know some sites out there are adept at refinishing...

          Marc,
I don't want to hijack your thread but this would dove-tail into it quite well. It also deals with refinishing of badges. Should we expect the pin on a badge to be the same color as the badge itself? I've seen pins that match on orginal badges as well as thoes which don't. Anybody?

Chet - hijack away! This is actually related and a great question.

              Hi guys,

Mark, great thread. Chet, I think that finish on the hinge and catch should be taken into consideration when critiquing a badge. It would be a deal killer for me if the rest of the badge and finish looked period.

I will post some pics of a refinished CCC (IMO), tomorrow when I get to work and if the owner says its cool.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

                Refinished Badges

In the last year I examined several Silver IABs, marked "JFS" and "HA" respectively, that I am convinced were original but with recently applied finishes. Unfortunately I cannot supply images.

The finishes were a fairly bright, semi-gloss coating that was supposed to mimic the later war washes seen on badges. But unlike the washes, these finishes were heavier, almost like a paint, and not flat in tone.

Most likely badges that had lost their original finishes to reveal the zinc base metal were chosen as applying a new finish would be pretty cheap and the increase in value substantial. I would think in many cases the grey zinc badges would be difficult to sell at all so a new finish did wonders for their marketability. And if the dealer can get the worn badge very cheaply, he can do very well selling the refinished badge.

There are badges fully assembled BEFORE a finish was applied and there are ones where hinge and badge were assembled AFTER the main finish was applied. Finishes on hinge and catch MAY vary from the finish of the rest of the badge, e.g. Berg & Nolte war and qualification badges.
                  Cheers, Frank
