    GAB - Marked GB42 - Variant hinge ?

    Hello to all folks,

    I would like to show you one of the last Gabs addition i took at last Military Show in Italy.

    It's a not so common Gab to find the marked Brehmer GB42.
    Imo this is a good GB without any red flags and with the same finish left that i already saw on this maker Gab. Only with a strange hinge.
    I looked on the forum but i can't see another Gab with this hinge.. On other forums too.
    I looked the Brehmer's Luftwaffe badges, not being my field but anyway i can't see this hinge on him badges...

    The only one that i saw and probably with the same shape is on the page 343 on Frank's book.


    Imo this GAB is 100% original without any problems.
    But what's your thinks? Has anyone ever seen this hinge on some badge?

          Hi Nicola,
          I have searched in my files but did not come across the same hinge.
          I believe the hinge is original to the badge.
          The hinge you describes in the book on p343 almost looks identical, but the hingeplate on your example is more rounded on the corners.
          Close, but not 100% identical as in the book.

          But IMO a very nice GAB with a special hingevariant!

            Hi Nicola,

            I am not so sure this is a legitamate hinge variant, it may be a replaced hinge and pin system. If you notice the pin looks thicker than what we normally see on Brehmer badges, and with a different tool mark on the top of the pin near the hinge. Also the hinge here has rounded corners, compared to the Brehmer #GAB you show from Frank's Book.

            Also appears to be two separate tension foot prints on the reverse of the badge, so I suspect we are looking at a replacement here instead of a true hinge variant.

              Really thanks for your inputs!
              At the moment i haven't the badge in hand, when comeback to home i will do some better pics of the hinge and the badge itself. I supposed about a variant hinge because looking the finish it is the same on the badge and the hinge too.

              The pin compared with my other Unmarked Brehmer is, as you said, more larger and different from the foot.
              About the separate tension foot prints aren't two ( old pin and new pin ) but only one that touch over the hinge plate and not on the reverse of the badge...

              I will do some better pics that can be helpful.

                The separate tension foot prints aren't two as said in the past message but only one from this pin. No other old foot prints.

                  From another view, look to see the "gost" of the possible old hinge, in the red arrow, that remained.

                  What's is it? The old gost of metal sheet hinge plate? But aren't other foot prints.. Usually the foot of pin touch the reverse of the badge, like my unmarked GB, leaving the sign.

                    Thanks for the new detailed pics, sorry to say it only confirms my original thought that the hinge is a replacement. You can see the original pin tension footprint and also the solder outline of the original hinge.

                      I tend to agree with you now. Was a hinge plate here, like saw in other Brehmer

                      So for the my future refence, i happened that this hinge nobody has never seen on German badges ? Right ?

                        Looking at these closeups I have to agree you can see this hinge is a replacement.
                        Tom was correct all the time. He sure has eagle eyes.....
