Thank you guys-I got lucky with this one because it was a pre-internet purchase.

Nice one to me as well, but is that zinkpest on the reverse side of the eagle's wings? If so, you should soak it in vaseline to prevent further deterioration, but it appears as if you may have already done that.

Hi Dale no never put anything on my badges but one or two could do with some sort of mild clean is Vaseline best option and if so how long do I soak for? The substance you can see on the eagles wing is from an old sticky price label-I will remove this with some mild detergent.

Vaseline is best, rub it in with a rag and wipe off, it will leave a film that will stop further pesting.

Thanks for the info-I will get some Vaseline tomorrow and inspect the ones that need sorting. Will Vaseline damage any gilt silver or bronze finish or is it best to avoid cleaning these areas?

The Vaseline is strictly to help treat and/or prevent zincpest. It will not harm the silver or bronze finish on any zinc badge that I have used it on. My method is to hand apply over the entire badge, let it set overnight or even up to a week if I don't have much time, and then use real cotton (not synthetic) cotton balls or pads to gently wipe it off and cotton q-tips to get it from the crevices.

Use a hair dryer after you apply the Vaseline and it will even out the Vaseline all over the area that you want cleaned this really helps a lot.
