    Legion Condor Panzer badge

    Hi Guys

    Please could you let me know your thoughts on this one? It appears to be silver plated brass with a hand made hinge (hence tube is too long on one side). I haven't been able to exactly match it to any design but it is certainly die struck with sheer fretted edges like the type II German made pieces.
    It is absolutely caked in polish residue but has a deep tarnish beneath in the recesses and on the reverse.

        Hi Patrick,

        I have one other example in my fakes files (can't remember where it was posted). It appears to be a reproduction based upon the design of the 2nd pattern pre-war Spanish-made version.

          Better magnification would help but as is, on those photos, the edges look more like cast production to me.

              It certainly has the same basic design as the badge you posted although some small details look different- on the tank especially

              here is a photo of the edge, there are saw marked but it is a good bit thinner than the Schickle badge you have posted.

                The simplified tank design on that badge is distinctive with only 3 road wheels in the tread assembly instead of the usual 4.

                As a point of review, I'll first show compilations of the tanks on accepted originals with two examples of each. First here are the 1st and 2nd pattern Spanish-made pre-war version in silver, followed by Juncker and Meybauer's wartime offerings in Tombak.

                  Here are the Schickle and presumed S&L wartime offerings in Tombak. The S&L-attributed badges with the pointed lily-pad hinges was the first design to introduce hubcaps on the road wheels.

                  The badge from the opening post, in contrast to all others has a simplified tank design with only 3 plain road wheels and a featureless side panel.

                            As an aside, I find it interesting that the tank upon which the design was based in 1936 wasn't a modern German Panzerkampfwagen but rather the ubiquitous old French designed Renault FT-17. I guess that makes sense for a badge designed and produced originally in Spain rather than Germany.

                              Hi Norm, thanks for sharing some of your close up photos with everyone, these badges are so few & far between that any original is truly a find.

                              As an aside, I think the tank design for the badge is an amalgam of several 1930's designs from several nation's respective armored corps. Some of the British tankettes are well represented in the boxy design IMO.
