Not everything need to be in good shape to be collectable. I was not sure about if it is original or not, but now where this is confirmed the story fits as well. The current Owner bought it from a Russian War Vet who took it of from a German Soldier who was burned in a Tank at the Odessa area, from that it could be in this condition. It is always hard to take a Story for full, but that guy have no reason to lie because he sell it not for a high price, he sell it for and apple and a egg like we say in Austria

Buy the badge, not the story.....
This is a zinc badge, meltingpoint about 420°C.
A normal fire has about 1000°C.
Imo this badge didn't come even near a fire......
Just my 2 cents on it.

Exactly what i do, i buy the Badge the Story is second always....that was the last 25 Years like this and will be until i am 2 Meters below green Gras But when the Badge comes for 50 Euro do you really think i care? Its original, condition not good but the Price.....is good.

It appears to be a silver grade.
I agree it was not in a fire though, poor storage IMO.
Here is what it looked like before.
