    I am very (extremely) pleased to see the photograph of the cut out GAB in wear, as this is a very rare photograph, in my opinion, as it is the first I have ever seen of the fully cut out general assault badge in actual wear at all. Many people have considered this badge a reproduction given their rarity, so this only helps verify their being produced pre-1945.

      I rarely post "Wow!" but WOW! One picture sure can say a lot.

      Yep, obviously an "Unknown" pilot and an Assmann. Does appear to be a P/O. I don't suppose they came in the group??

        Tim, thanks. No pilot or PO badges in the group I'm afraid. I bought this set many years ago from Detlev Niemann. When I bought it, the recipient was unknown...I believe these items turned up at a flea market or something in Germany. I did the research to discover who the man was. The set has 2 modified EK2 (the one not pictured is modified in the same way, but in much better condition), neck ribbon/ring, the EK1, clasp and an album w/ about 200 pics in it. Sumpf apparently knew H u Rudel, because there was a picture of rudel in the album. When I lifted the pic out, I discovered an inscription to Sumpf and signature of Rudel on the back...something Niemann had missed. There is also an extremely worn copy of the RK portrait at the beginning of my post. Almost like he had carried it in his wallet for decades to show that he was an RKT. Sumpf's award was so late in the war that the Luftwaffe records didn't survive. His award had to be confirmed after the war through record reconstruction and interviews. Sumpf was an NCO bomber pilot who saw extensive combat, primarily in the Med from the photo album content. He was assigned to KG100 at the end of the war, and I have often wondered what he did to warrant the RK. KG100 flew, among other things, special pathfinder type missions, and also dropped experimental ordnance...guided missile etc. I have always prized this group because the clarity of the portrait makes the provenance almost as good as it gets...the photos are super too.

          Very interesting. And it looks like http://www.das-ritterkreuz.de/ is using the same photo with the bottom badge blacked out for some reason!

            Marc, yes I gave them that photo several years ago! I thought it the right thing to do...putting a face w/ the name after all these years. On the other copies of the pic in the album (there are 3 total copies), the bottom badge is inked out...almost like Sumpf realized it was wrong and was embarrased by it. Here are 2 more pics from the album. These appear to have been taken in Italy. Note the unique uniform combos. Tropical shirts w/ continental trousers and caps. The other men are Sumpf's crew, as they feature prominently in the other photos. The man standing next to Sumpf was later KIA, as there is also a picture of his grave. You can make out the RO badge on him. Sumpf is wearing a pilot badge, and another very large badge that is tough to make out...

                I've seen other printing errors where NEGATIVES are printed from the reverse side, so I thought that may be the problem with the von Majer. But whether you modify it by reversing the image or making a chiral image...you'll never get that FJ eagle to face away from his sleeve and towards his heart.

                I can just imagine someone cutting out little FJ badges and placing them under the original picture in preparation for re-imaging. Perhaps, as a memorial the family requested a pix with all his badges. Two personal examples: I have a picture of my grandfather from the mid-twenties where the suit, shirt and tie were painted in and; a friend's family reunion picture from the fifties includes members who were not able to attend.
