    Adolf Scholze for Review

This is an Adolf Schloze PAB that I just picked up in issue box I am relitively certin that the badge is good as it matches the example on LORENZO's tank badge site. What bothers me is the box, and the fact that it is JFS marked. I was under the impression that JFS as far as tank badges go only made numbered badges. So my question is.......wrong box for this badge, JFS made boxes for other MFG of tank badges, it belongs with a numbered JFS badge, Or it is a FAKE. again what are your opinions?
    Thanks again
    Jerry

        Dear Jerry,

Hard to tell about that carton. A bit too nice in my opinion to have the badge name (without number???) AND the maker on it, I also would expect cartons like these to be with printed letters (applied before folding) and not sloppily stamped letters. That would be a very uneconomic step in the production of that carton and would require much more work effort in mass production. Not so for a faker who runs low production numbers. I do not trust it.

At least two things can be said:

-it doesn´t belong to that badge for the reasons you mentioned.

        -the AS badge is fine.

        Cheers, Frank H.

Why more than one die design?

Now another question - why did AS have at least three different die designs for PABs?

One type is what Jerry shows here, with sharper contours on the scooped back and the A.S. initials for the maker's mark, and a "squarer" crimp mount for the ball hinge.

The other two types have the AS in triangle below the hinge as the maker's mark, and a round crimp mount for the ball hinge. One has sharper countours on the scooped back, while the other is much smoother. See this thread on AS PABs. http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...8528#post78528

All of these share a characteristic that they're approximately 62mm tall instead of other PABs at 60-61mm. The front details are similar, but not identical. Look especially at the "rock" under the tracks. The type that Jerry shows here has three prominent grass blades that grow up over top of the "rock." The kind with the AS in triangle mark with the sharper back contours has two prominent grass blades that grow up over the rock, while the one with smoother contours only has one.

All three types seem to have the really thin metal at the base of the gun tube, that Frank H. and I discussed in an earlier thread.

So, speculation: are A.S. initials and AS in triangle the same company? Why so many types of dies for one badge?

Hi Greg. I don't believe they are the same company. Two different firms both with initials "AS"....either Adolf Scholze or A.D. Schwerdt.

The question that has been raised before is whose logo is whose?

                Lorenzo,
I have my doubts as well that they are the same company, though when you put them side-by-side they are very similar.

For what it's worth, Mike Tucker told me that he assigns AS in triangle to A.D. Schwerdt because he once got a PAB like that in an envelope marked for Schwerdt. I haven't seen envelopes marked for Schwerdt or Scholze.

                  Dear Greg,

That is turning the collecting world upside down. All AS in triangle marked badges (e.g. e-boat 2nd type) are supposed to be Adolf Scholze since decades.

                  Cheers, Frank H.

                    Frank,
Yes, I have always thought AS in triangle was Scholze, but I don't recall seeing any period advertisement or other documentation. Not that the PAB in the Schwerdt-marked envelope is positive documentation, either. Myself, I call AS in triangle Scholze, but I don't think it's proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.
