    Heer Flak doubts

I was asked to put this flak for discussion. No doubts it's original Juncker. But the finish seems VERY strange to me. Imo the badge is repainted...

        Weird one Alex.

One some of the pictures, like the reverse one, I tend to like the finish. But on others, like the closeups of the reverse the finish looks thicker than normal.

Interesting too is the cut catchplate. No problems with originality, just an interesting variant I don't think I have seen before on a Juncker.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

          Tom,

It's not only thick but also of a very metallic silver color. Never have seen such Juncker flaks before...

Not a color I normally associate with CEJ flaks...but if it is a repaint then they did a masterful job staying away from the hingepin. The wear is very believable and as Tom said it looks very nice on the back. One I would like to inspect in hand as photos can be tough.

Thanks for posting - nice original!

There is no paint build-up in the gears or rivets - small places.

Imo the reverse is just polished/cleaned. But on obverse the paint border is visible very well

That is not a "paint border", it is the die strike line from when they made the badge and die-struck it out.

However, I think you are correct. This badge has been polished not painted. My pick is that someone has dropped it into some silver-dip for a short while. Just enough time to remove the gun-metal darkening wash that Juncker applied at the factory and let it cut through to the original silver plating, that Juncker applied to it before they put the gun-metal wash over the silver.

An army flak badge from Juncker should have a nice antique looking, bright, gunmetal-grey finish like the eagles on their aircrew badges. Never seen a silver finish on any of their WH flak badges.

However, I suppose a silver finish could be a possibilty on a late war example if they ran out of gunmetal finish but this one looks silver-dipped to my eye.

Given time the bright silver may dull down and the gun-metal effect return as the badge begins to tarnish back to what it was,

                    Chris
