2 early Meybauer IAB's for review.

    Hi guys,

sunny weather over here so i decided to take these two birds out of the nest.
Two early Meybauer iab's in tombak.
For me personal, one of the best eagle designs seen on any iab.
They are very interesting to collect as all of them are different from eachother.
Meybauer put lot of effort and care in hand finishing their iab.
Each badge is different in cutout, not only at the swastika and near the bird,
but also in the leaves throughout the whole wreath.
The badge on the left is carved out on every imaginable place, while the warhorse on the right has more sober cut outs.
I hope to find an example with first pattern set up someday... not an easy task.

              Hi,

always nice to see some early Cut-Out IABs!!!
Also in my opinion the most nice IAB design out there.

I forgot to say it's nice to see the variant "cut outs" side by side. As you said they're all slightly different. My example is a full cut out.. I still need a partial cut out variant. Stewy

I think my personal favourite is the partial cut out. On the full examples i sometimes feel the additional cut near the left side of the bird feet is a bit overkill. Although the leafs are nicely done. But i must say it's a good example of craftmanship. Sometimes i wonder what kind of tool Meybauer used to do these complicated cut-outs. Certainly not for an employee with shakey hands.

One thing I wonder about on these is, who did the cutting out? I would imagine that factories during the war were the same as here in England. My dad worked in one as a boy. It was pretty much all piece work, so the more you did the more you earnt. So, all that extra intricate work wouldn't have given you more wages. Just a thought folks, any ideas? Stewy

                        Hi Jelle,

Both very nice, early Meybauers! Both lovely, but I especially like the one on the right with all the great patina, just looks great. The other example is also really nice with the inside wing cutout in addition to the swas, very nice extra touch that make these early Meybauers something special.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

                            Hi Stewy

......Quote"One thing I wonder about on these is, who did the cutting out?"

I would imagine that the nearer the beginning of the war German citizens were involved in earlier badge production. However, as the war progressed I think POW's, political prisoner, slave labor, etc would have been involved in badge production.

Hi Bruce thanks for replying. That's my point, if Germany was anything like England the more items you produced the more you were paid. I can't imagine folks in the civvy sector being too chuffed doing the "cutting out". POW's as you suggested wouldn't have put their heart & soul into it I wouldn't of thought. Just a quandary I doubt we'll ever solve now. Appreciate your reply. Stewy
