PAB "Cut-out"

Just received this from a friend who picked it up in Germany for me. It is a little banged up (back of the eagles head is squashed), but still a nice find. What do you guys think?

Well you probably don't now how extremely lucky you are. Not only is this a rare original cut-out grass PAB but at the same time the first 2 pattern buntmetall Daisy PAB in silver I have ever seen.

These straight gun Daisys in Buntmetall are without a doubt amongst the rarest PAB's ever made. Here is it's Bronze "un-cut brother.

reverse zinc. Notice that on this badge a new catch was put in place after the original one was lost in the cut-out process. On your badge the original catch is still in place. Because it was sitting so low they decided to save it by just cutting arround it. Something you see quite often on these modified PAB's

Daisy?

Hi Philippe,

Thanks for the comments and the additional pictures. After missing the one on Helmuts site a few months ago, I was on a mission to get one of these. I guess I did ok.

It really amazes me how much you know about PAB's. The only way I could have ever known if it were a "daisy" badge is by looking for the daisy. But oh no... it's been cut out! How in the world could you tell this is a "daisy"?

pretty hard badges to find huh?
Thats easy to see its a Daisy from the eagle design, very specific to this maker.
Not knocking your badge in any way but that has to be one of the sloppiest cutouts I have seen yet. Must have been in a hurry to get that one finished.

You for sure have a point but taken in to account that this was done in te field I'm always amazed to see how well executed these cut-out's are. John example is more what you would expect to see when soldiers in the field with whatever tools they had at hand were trying to execute such a delicate job without damaging the entire badge.

Also on this badge is't obvious that they tried following the line set by the catch resulting in some of the grass area being still there. Maybe the owner just wanted to avoid the "bump" look he otherwise would have created. Another way to avoid the "bump" can be seen on other examples where they simply left a few grass stalks in place

Great Badge with a lot of character..
How can we tell its silver?, is that a little of the finish left on front, how can we tell its not something else?
Also has it since neem polished, is this a thin layer of brass, amazing brass shine...just curious about finish in general, when I first saw badge I thought it was a bronze PAB..

Hi Jeff,

There really can't be any mistake here. If you're still in doubt just compare the reverse of John's silver badge with the reverse of my bronze one in post 4.

The shiny gold color is nothing else than the base metal (buntmetall) out of which this badge is made. The shine can be a result of the way it was scanned or the result of polish. You can compare the effect with polishing a copper lamp dull when uncleaned very shiny when newly polished.

The same effect as on John's example is visible to a lesser degree on this buntmetall Hymmen.

Thanks for all the comments guys! And thanks Philippe for the explanation and additional example. I can totally relate to Jeffs question though, when I first saw my scans I thought they looked bad too. Rest assured that the badge looks much better in person, although you can tell it was definately worn. I'd like to imagine that the damage to the top and rear of the eagles head is due to the "bumping" against the inside of the panzers cupola when they ran through a building or something.
